Brief Introudction

Global Comprehensive Abortion Care Project was started from Ist May 2007 for an initial period of 5 years. The project is implementing in five IPPF regions, South Asia, East & South East Asia and Oceania, Arab World,Europe and Africa. The Western Hemisphere Region is being funded separately by the Foundation.

The implementation of this project will require a multi-disciplinary and collaborative approach. IPPF Central Office will work closely with IPPF Regional Office (RO) abortion focal points and regional staff specifically recruited for the project. In turn, the ROs will work closely in their respective region, with member Associations (MA) implementing specific country projects under Global Comprehensive Abortion Care Project (GCACP) and with other MAs to raise their awareness and commitment in relation to abortion, and if possible to start, broaden or improve comprehensive abortion care.

Global Comprehensive Abortion Care project started from June 2007 in Nepal. The project is implementing six districts Kanchanpur, Kailali, Banke, Palpa, Sarlahi and Ilam . The first four districts are located in western Nepal and two districts are in eastern Nepal.  They are all economically disadvantaged with high levels of illiteracy among women, limited employment opportunities and poor road networks. FPAN has branch and outreach clinics in these districts. There are limited agencies working in these districts and there is severely reduced access to safe abortion services for women, particularly in rural areas.

The project emphasizes the provision of comprehensive abortion care. This includes pre abortion counselling, surgical and or medical abortion, post abortion care and post abortion contraceptive services including emergency contraception. In addition, it includes advocacy to improve the conditions for greater access to safe abortion and IEC activities to inform the population, the communities and the decision makers about legal conditions of abortion and also availability of abortion and family planning services. Project  also cut across other important sexual and reproductive health rights issues such as gender, quality of care and access to contraceptives information and services.
